Im a newbie in mwo, and for me 3rd person view is a bad idea.
This is a sim game, hard to learn, where you need to think about heat, weapons load outs, position, cover, teammates, movement and torso twist, radar awareness.

This is why i play. It is not a point and click, twitching, fast fingers crapy shooter game.
This game requires IQ. This game is fun because its hard to master, because you need teammates to cover your back.

I have seen other QQ’s on other subjects and remained silent because you guys deal with it.

On 3rd person view i cannot remain silent.
I like this game so much that beacuse of it i will be buying a new rig just to play it, i want it to be ready and good so i can play community warfare. I want to give you guys (PGI) real money.

I like the game. Please don´t ruin it.

Please no first person in MW:O. Horrid idea. Horrid.

Don’t your mean “no >3rd< person"? MW games have always been 1st person. You want to feel like you're trapped in BattleMech cockpit. (Well, I do, anyway.) Better a sim, IMHO, than an arcade game. The game is already too FPS action based: even more than MW4 which was widely criticised for being too FPS action based compared to previous MW games that were more dependent on good tactics than good spit-second trigger timing.

  3. BBWolfe says:

2nd person view sounds like a good compromise.

  4. Pat says:

Please please PLEASE fix matchmaking and the overall new player experience before you add things like 3rd player view.

The game has a steep learning curve, which is good. But absolutely 0 explanation about any aspect of the game, role warfare, mech customization, heat efficiency, teamwork….nothing. You are turning off wide swathes of your potential market when they get frustrated and walk away to play other games like Hawken.

Please focus PGI’s efforts on new player orientation and new player retention if you want the game to survive long-term!

  5. Xajorkith says:

    1) The possibilities and dynamics of balancing a MechWarrior team-based combat game must be both exciting and perturbing. Certainly there are far more critics on the forums than supporters – though that’s hardly unusual. Have staff acquainted with the broad topic of game theory been acquired to crunch numbers and study the game balance? I can’t help feeling that programmers, artists and managers need input from game theory specialists.

    2) There are a lot of bugs that were reported a long time ago, back in Closed Beta, that have yet to be fixed. There are a lot of log files detailing crashes. I’m assuming thousand of these logs go to someone. Runaway threads, bad texture mapping, unreleased memoroy, level/map errors: the logs are full of easy to spot patterns. Better to devote resources to fix bugs than create new content, surely? I’d rather have a bug-free sampler of the full game rather than lots of content that don’t quite work.

    Regards…

I liked you guys.I didnt get a Reeemer code or your bobbin head. Please I want one for my mech warior cockpit its so kool…

  7. Claw says:

I don’t get it. 1st person was one of the key pillars PGI sold us on. Reasoning be damned, I for one think this is dishonorable salesmanship. Whats the real reason for this change? 5 million in the bank for a game that’s not even out of beta is not enough for PGI to realize they’ve got a solid concept?

Y’know what Russ, PGI? Maybe you’re right, maybe you know what’s best. But if you do this, you can say goodbye to my business, and many other peoples besides. No hard feelings, this just isn’t what I paid for.

  8. Elistaire Drummond says:

I understand, that it´s important to draw new players in. But! Are all new players 3rd-person-addicts?

  9. Vichus says:

Ok, I understand that PGI is concerned about the learning curve for new players. I agree that adding a third person camera to fix this problem is going to change the way the game is played. Instead of complaining, lets see if we can present an alternative that will ease the learning curve without adding a third person view. Maybe a set of training tutorials that will run new players through an obstacle course. Maybe there can be trial commando only battles for new players to cut their teeth. Any other ideas out there?

  10. Bingarosso says:

    Hi Guys.

Been listening for a while now, and I love that you guys put so much into a community I love and care about. That this podcast exists, and has been so successful in reaching out to and communicating with the primary developers of the relevant games for the community is just pretty much unprecedented, and kudos are due to both you and PGI in making this happen.

That being said, this episode really felt like a missed opportunity. It felt like Russ was being extremely candid and really enjoying talking about the game and he kept getting cut off just when he was getting rolling, primarily by Sean. It was frustrating to listen to, because I was rooting for you guys to seize the moment and it didn’t happen. You mention (perhaps a bit much…) that you get a lot of shit from the community for not asking the hard hitting questions, etc. And here’s a situation where the guy is just spewing information freely and you are cutting him off? Oof.

Speaking of which, one thing that I really think can help tighten up the content you guys put out is if you spend much less time talking about the negative aspects of the community. They’re grabbing your attention too much, and I doubt they’re your core audience. If they are your core audience, you don’t want them to be. It’s really been an increasing topic of late, and, as you rightly point out it is most certainly a small minority of overall battletech players, and further, the spirit of this community, in game, is actually amongst the best I’ve ever encountered. It has a mature, welcoming fan base, tons of ex-mil, tons of grown up folks who just want to have some fun. Focus on that, and just ignore the rest, imo.

Finally, and this is a more general comment, I realize that NGNG is now crowd funded and you guys are trying to do this full time. I wish you a lot of luck, but man, you guys spend like the first 40 minutes of your show doing very little but asking for money. The news is an auto fast forward for me. I want to support you guys, and I think you’re doing good work, but it really takes away from the content, and it is especially frustrating when it’s like “Garth can only answer 2 questions in community questions before he has to go because we spent the last hour plugging ourselves and then doing irrelevant “cutsy” commentary.” Sure, you gotta entertain, but it actually creates a weird tension with the listener when I’m like “Man, this could be actual information about the game from Garth or whoever the guest is…” and instead it is like some sort of bad pun…

Once again, I think you guys are doing a great job and I appreciate the work you do. Keep it up. I’m just trying to be helpful.

  11. David Chamberlain says:

oh! please give the option for switching between 1st and 3rd person, I’d love to see my beautiful mech in action!

  12. Wilhelm says:

I love to have a 3rd person mode like in the old days when you played for example Mechwarrior 4! :D

  13. Mad Elf says:

So we Founders should just “suck it up” if you put in a feature that allows noobs to cheat, without any means of stopping them?

Way to bite the hand that feeds you. Way to ensure we never give you any money again.

    • Cattra Kell says:

Quoted from 29:55: “… start popping into first person when they want to start taking, you know, start experiencing advanced aspects of the game like, like actual mercenary aspects like community warfare aspects, then they use first person only when they get into those situations…” – Russ

  14. Terry says:

I have the solution!!!! Third person only games….. everybody wins.
there is no switching back or forth. you either play 1st or 3rd. ha…no brainer.
The game is 3rd or not.

  15. tigerdelta says:

Will there be and space fighters

  16. SupaChigga says:

It’s about damn time that they added this in. A mechwarrior game without 3rd person doesn’t even deserve the mechwarrior name

  17. Rigel7 says:

    Simple Solution:

If we HAVE to allow 3P, then simply allow us to choose if we will enter a match that has it on. If I don’t want to play with n00bs using 3P, I can choose a match that has it turned off for everyone.

If however, I would like to have it turned on to play with it, then I can, and so can everyone else.

But forcing me to play in a 3P match is not acceptable.
